5 BEST FOODS FOR HEALTHY SKIN

We’ve all heard the expression before ‘you are what you eat’ – this couldn’t ring more true when talking about skin health. With the skin being our largest organ, it’s not a leap to imagine that what’s going on inside is reflected on the outside.

If you’re aiming for healthy, dewy, smooth as-can-be skin, my advice is to first consider what you are putting in your mouth! In order to get that glow, your diet needs to focus on preventing the three main skin sabotaging processes: poor digestive health, free radical damage and inflammation.

I know, I know, it sounds complicated… But don’t fret! Bottom line is that you can feed your face with simple superfoods to boost the health of your skin from the inside out!

A note on Superfoods…

Superfoods aren’t just exotic foods grown in far away lands only to be found in health food stores. Many nutrient-packed superfoods are simply just delicious whole foods that can be easily incorporated in our busy lives.

Liver Loving Lemons

Lemons pack a serious superfood punch when it comes to skin health – they contain loads of Vitamin C (an antioxidant) which helps the body to produce Collagen (required for healthy, ‘taught’ skin). When squeezed in H20 and taken in the morning on an empty stomach they also help the liver with detoxification!

Cha-Cha-Chia & Flax Seeds

Both chia and flax seeds have the incredible ability to clean out the pipes! They help to keep things moving, allowing toxins to rid themselves from the body – stat. As an added benefit, they also contain Omega3 fats and antioxidants which help to repair damaged skin cells. Try sprinkling 1-2 tbsp. of chia or ground flax on your breakfast cereal or blending with your already oh-so-healthy green smoothie.

Beautifying Brazil Nuts

Eating just 4 Brazil nuts a day will give your body the right amount of the precious (often neglected) mineral, Selenium. This antioxidant mineral protects the cells from stress caused by things like pollution, smoking and a poor diet. As a morning or afternoon snack, pair a few nuts with an apple – or get all crazy and make your own Brazil nut milk!

Glowing Green Tea

Move over coffee, green tea is here for the win! Not only is green tea a healthy metabolism booster, it also contains compounds know as Catechins that prevent free radical damage and fight inflammation. Research shows that adding a fresh squeeze of lemon to your brew keeps the skin saving antioxidants around in the body longer.

Superstar Spirulina

If you’re ready to take your superfood status to the next level, I suggest adding a Sprulina Powder. It contains something called Chlorophyll (which is essentially the lifeblood of plants) which acts as a super-detoxifier for your insides. With it’s slightly unpleasant taste you’ll want to disguise it in your smoothie, or get a naturally flavoured superfood blend.

So there you have it! If you want healthy, nourished looking skin – start on the inside to in order to glow on the outside.
